Awesome, good sir.
Ok, on the subject of Naval aviators, who is this guy and what is he known for? Bonus: What type of plane is it?
Same guy/plane (colorized) with less kills.

VMF-17?
At the time of WWII, the Jolly Rogers were VF-17. Of course, the designations were changed to VF-84, 103, etc.

I think it's just VF-17. Pretty sure it was a Navy squadron.

Close enough. Now, what was he known for and what kind of plane is that?

Looks like a Hellcat. Wasn't his four-plane division the highest-scoring in the Navy?

Morning folks. Sorry I never gave the answer to my last post of the day yesterday. Here it is again..
I asked what those patches represented and the answer was the Organisation Todt.
BTW, an American infantry division had a very similar insignia...
What division was this?

Yep. It was and F6F Hellcat. Alexander Vraciu was the Navy's highest scoring ace of WWII.

I have no idea, but I enjoy learning the units/patches and all.

I'll give it a bit then reveal.
Saw your F4U on the last page BTW. Looks awesome!

I thought McCampbell, with 34, was the Navy high scorer. He got 9 in one mission during the Marianas Turkey Shoot.

You are correct, sir. My apologies for my mistake.

Hey, we all make 'em.
Am I the only one who thinks McCampbell bears a resemblance to Ted Williams?

So no guesses on the patch above? Alright, it belonged to the 90th Inf Div.
Lets get back to aircraft....
What was this plane's name and what was it used for?

That's the GeeBee racer, a treacherous beast.

You got it! It's always struck me as one of the most odd looking airplanes that I've ever seen. It's almost like they took a cartoon airplane and built it in real life.
