Thanks for that history bit. I learn something new on here every day!

Any play that World of Tanks? I have thought about it, but only have a laptop and am not sure if it would carry over on that. Wonder if the one for the xbox 360 is any good? (Although it gets a workout w/ Ghosts...)

Somewhat paralleling (although not exactly) the U.S. Tank Destroyer/Armor schism - whereas TDC's mission was to destroy enemy tanks, the Armor branch wanted to spearhead assaults, regardless of target. TDC supported infantry units who were unequipped with tanks.

Good point. One thing that a lot of folks don't realize is that the M4 Sherman was not intended to go toe to toe with other tanks. She was meant to break through the infantry and then go for things like arty batteries, supply depots, command centers. The tank killing was supposed to be done by the M-10's and later the M-36's.

Of course the Germans also had the whole Jagd series of vehicles that were analogues to U.S. tank destroyers - of course, the Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger were some of the most impressive combat vehicles of the war (although not without their limitations.)

I've always loved the German TDs. One thing I always found interesting is that the Germans considered their TD's to be artillery and the crew members of these vehicles wore the red trim of artillery troops instead of the pink trim (yes, pink) of Panzer troops.

I do. I't awesome but has nothing do do with actually being anything like the real thing. Still, it's a fun game.

I play it on a HP laptop and have no issues.

Just set your graphics to minimum after you download the game. You can do that from the options menu in the game. It will probably default to that setting anyway. You'll also want to make sure you've got a good high speed wi-fi available otherwise the game will lag like crazy.

Just lurking through this thread I have to say I'm pretty blown away by some of the knowledge you guys have about these old military photos.

Coming from someone who is interested but doesn't really know much about this subject, it's really damn impressive from the outside looking in.

Here's a link to their site.

World of Tanks

you can download it from there. Look in the top left of the screen and you'll see a link to their wiki page that is pretty cool as well.

U.S. tank destroyers were designated, essentially, the same as self-propelled artillery - all bearing the same designation "Gun Motor Carriage" - although TDC had their own insignia. In many ways it was a throw back to the birth of the tank - which, after all, was just an artillery piece (or even machine guns) mounted to a tractor - it was only after they started shooting at each other, and guys like Patton and Rommel got ahold of them that they became the combat/mounted "arm of decision".

With drones and relatively superior range and capabilities of aircraft, the tank may be seeing its sunset, but they were/are glorious machines of death.

Jump in when you can. I don't know a whole lot about armor, so I am learning everyday.

Thanks, Darth. I can't open it now at work but will tonight. I think it is about time to dust off my 1/35 Panther Ausf G kit to sit next to my Tiger...

The A7V was much more of a rolling ironclad than a tank, as we use that term today. Here is how she was operated -
