In the early 60s when I had wheels I'd pick up anyone who looked like a college student thumbing a ride. Hitchhiked myself frequently - would get off from Saturday classes and get a ride to the traffic circle (Florida and Airline) and hitch home to Bogalusa - never had any problems.

Not really a hitchhiker but i was at a Burger King in Nola around midnight after driving home from BR. This black homeless guy tapped on my passenger side window and asked me to order him a burger. I said sure and when I turned to make the order he opened my door and sat down next to me like we were old friends. He was drunk as shite and smelled like death and had his arm wrapped up in a big bandage.

I ended up driving him around for about 20 minutes like an idiot trying to find the place he was looking for before dropping him off in front of the Tulane hospital. Right before he gets out he grabbed my bag of food and his. I drove home hungry as I re-evaluated a lot of my life decisions.
