It appears to be a universal phenomenon. The Nordic countries, which have worked very hard to increase social mobility, are similar.

For the sake of clarification and because The NY Times decided to omit referencing it, yes the Crown Estate is obviously one of the major landowners. However to clarify, The Crown Estate =/= The Royal Family,
The revenue from The Crown Estate goes directly into their Treasury, thus for all intents and purposes serves “the people”.
The article is also somewhat lacking in not pointing out the differences between leasehold and freehold holdings. The former is very common (almost exclusive) in the densely populated southeast, while freehold is by far the most common outside of London, Kent, Essex, Surrey etc.
While it also may seem confusing to many here, this method does keep the properties in the higher populated areas more affordable than if they were all freehold. It also does complicate re#selling a little but in reality 99 years of a leasehold on a property initially should be plenty for most people. It’s simply a system that works there but couldn’t here.
It boils down to your philosophy, here corporations can end up owning metropolises with little to no revenue passing onto the people, whereas there with limited real estate available, the revenue regenerates itself for the use of the whole population.

Correct. I like Yaron Brooks description of the economic 'pie'. Which he actually hates. It's not that we have one pie and we're all fighting over the biggest piece. The way capitalism really works is that we're all in the kitchen making a really big pie and the more chefs that are in the kitchen the bigger the pie gets, the bigger everybody share of the pie gets. Also, the better we get as pie chefs or the better pie chefs we allow in the kitchen, the better tasting all our pie is and the quicker we build a bigger pie.

Antitrust.
Antitrust laws are vital to the continuance of capitalism. A key tenet to capitalism is fair and equal competition. A level playing field. When certain corporations get very large and monopolize an industry they can use their power and influence via the government, to push down competitors. This is crony capitalism. It's also part of the reason many free-market capitalist and Libertarians prefer a small government. When government is decentralized and weak, then there's no vehicle for monopolistic robber barons to wield power and lord over us.

And let’s not kid ourselves, the 1% are way more responsible for moving the world forward and raising the standard of living for everyone than any other group.
