My spouse had AC in his house when he grew up but his parents choose not to use it so he's used to not having a cool house. I catch him turning our AC temp up even during the summer and I kinda freak out. He's used to it so doesn't bother him to not have a cool house.

Might be something to this theory. I grew up in houses built in the 60's with just window units & attic fans (I'm 37). Mr. 1999 grew up with central AC. He would keep the house at 73 or lower all the time, but when I'm home alone I keep it at 78. There are days when he's at home during the summer that I walk around in a sweatshirt.

Grew up South of Houston, didn't have AC until we moved to a nicer house when I was 10. Attended 12 years of public school with no AC grandparents is LA went there entire lives with no AC. Our bodies were just adapted to it, we also made use of fans to keep air moving through open windows. I never thought much about it as a kid,and up until we moved to a rent house that had a couple of window units I really thought AC was something only rich people had.

One window unit and an attic fan

In SW Houston, like others have said open windows and attic fan moving huge amounts of air. Didn't have to worry about sleeping with open windows back then.

Grew up in the 50's and 60's without A/C. Had attic and window fans. Left our doors and windows open too. I don't believe it was as hot as it is now, and can't believe how many survive the summers here without A/C. A high number of my home health patients did not have A/C. It was pure hell in their homes.

People also used to sleep on the porch at night when it was cooler.

My grandparents original home was two big rooms, one side for cooking and eating and the other room for sleeping, there was a 12 foot space between the rooms that caught the breeze and we would sleep out there if the bugs weren't bad.
