Uggh. Nothing more painful than gout.

Have had it on and off for years. Maybe 1-2 flair ups per year. Couple of times could put NO weight on the foot. Had to use crutches.

There may be some lifestyle changes one could do to minimize the possibilities.

Check with your doctor. Mine eventually put me on Allopurinol, which is used to treat gout and certain types of kidney stones. It is also used to prevent increased uric acid levels.

My levels are within range now and no flair ups in months, so I guess it's working. Hate to take a drug, but the pain avoidance is the goal and continued gout flair ups can lead to kidney damage, arthritis etc.

Not something you F with for the long haul.

Both are more common in males for whatever reason, and while I have never experienced either one, after 21 years in the ER - I will say that it seems that the pain from a kidney stone is worse based on the presentation of men to the ER.

poor dudes have been doubled over in pain, literally begging for relief.

I am aware that size and location of the stone impact the pain level as does the intensity of a gout flare up.

in any case- godspeed for y'all who deal with either on the regular. both are acutely painful af.

It's more of the degree of obstruction and how acute in onset it is. That tends to correlate with stone size, but I've seen plenty of those same presentations with 2 mm stones.
