In general, the ability to write well has suffered because students these days don’t like to read, which means that they struggle to recognize what good writing even looks like.
Who can blame them? They’ve grown up digitally wired their whole lives. Information is at their fingertips. Spending hours reading a book when they can entertain themselves with a YouTube binge makes reading seem laborious.
My best student writers are all big readers.

It’s killed spelling, mine included. I’ll often be writing on the whiteboard and find myself stuck on words that I know that I should be able to spell.

I have struggled to instill a love of reading with my girls. This may sound nerdy or w/e, but the excitement of reading a book where the author has pulled you in, hooked you, and you're turning pages looking for 'it', is awesome.
I told my girls that I thought good spellers are usually readers, because they see words spelled correctly so often. And of course you're right about seeing proper sentence structure and all that. They may have turned a corner a little bit the last few months... I've noticed them carrying some books and reading a little bit more but I wish they were into it like I am.
All the screen time is tough competition...
