There are certainly worse things for a child to play than Minecraft. It honestly has a lot of math skills involved and architecture. Overall I'd say it's near the top of non-educational games that still have educational side effects.

my kids are nerds.. minecraft is the only game they play on the xbox
mine are 8, 11, and 12
my kids to read a lot though and even in the summer time I make them read 30 min to an hour a day.

I hope I don't have to worry about any hanky Panky yet. But I know in a few years I'm gonna walk into the playroom one day and catch them playing doctor or something.
