Because the majority of folks on welfare already have jobs and are white. But that doesn't fit the narrative of "lol, look at the dindus buying rims with the food stamps" that you tell like to tell your buddies for a cheap laugh and a pat on the butt.
Ahh, there's the race card.

Just because I can afford it doesn't mean I should pay more.

Some people get laid off of employment and can't find a job. Some people have medical emergencies and find themselves in so much debt that they'll never recover. Some folks lose a spouse and can no longer afford to support themselves and pay bills.
And if that's what food stamps were actually going for most would be ok with that. But when people are driving F250s, Infinitis, Lexus, buying liquor, beer, and cigarettes on a daily basis, yet the tax payers have to feed them. That's where people get upset.
I own a convenience store and have yet to find a customer who actually needed food stamps and to top it off they usually only buy junk food. Some even go as far as to not get married or not work as many hours so they don't lose their "benefits".
I also have customers who have lost jobs in this crap economy that need it and can't get it.
