The basic story that Niles and Bernard told was that they were turned away from Studio 54. It wasn't personal, that was the hottest club ON EARTH at the time. You needed a recognizable face, extra tip money, cocaine, space available inside AND sometimes, someone in Rubell's inner circle to smooth your way inside.
Anyway, they went back to their apartment and added lyrics to the sign, essentially to Studio 54 to Awww, frick OFF!
They toned it down for commerical release and flipped the plot to praise Studio 54, assuming they would be more welcome if the song was a hit.
