It was my 78 year old grandmother. The men were all in their late 70s or early 80s. People they had been going to church with for 50+ years. They couldn't actually carry the coffin but they were just listed in the program as pallbearer.
I know man. But when you say Sunday School I can't help but think little kids. I am assuming it was the "teachers" that did the lifting?
Seperate question: Do Protestants bury people on Sundays?

I went to a funeral today for a good man and was thinking about the two times that I was a pallbearer. The great honor to be asked. Have you ever been one?
About 20 times.
As you get older, you get to do it a lot more.
Consider it a huge honor.

Just in the last 3 years, 4 times.

Really? I didn't think it was all that heavy. It was much lighter than what I was expecting. Maybe it has something to do with the casket. But there were 6 of us carrying it, and 5 of us are in shape guys in their 30s.
The caskets were much lighter than I expected, too.
I've done it twice. Once for my grandmother (she was like 90 so it wasn't a super sad funeral), and once for my Uncle. My Uncle's funeral was super sad because he was diagnosed with cancer and died 8 weeks later. He was my favorite Uncle and always the life of the party, it was so hard to see his immediate family grieving (pallbearers leave the funeral home last, so you see them say their last goodbyes).

This right here is the worst of all. That will break you down.

They do. My granny was never sick. My grandfather said the only two times she was even in the hospital was when her daughters were born. She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, in March. This summer they also diagnosed her with leukemia. The chemo wasn't working on the myeloma so they ran more tests. Doctors said the treatment for that was the same as she was already undergoing. They quit treatments and just tried to make her comfortable. She died right before Labor Day and the funeral was that Sunday afternoon.
We did the lifting. It was the old people that couldn't lift that were honorary. They weren't teachers they were just in an old folks Sunday school class.

I was a pallbearer for my three month old cousin. The hardest thing I have ever done in my life. It was only two of us. I will have that image engraved in my head forever. I also was one for my Grandfather.

Only once for one of my good friends and I was just 23. Too young to be the first time.
