Working on a project and was looking at running underground electrical service for a camp. Have been told that voltage drop would be significant running greater than 200-250 feet underground.
Why is there no issue above ground?
Thanks for opinion!

V=I (sqrd)×R
Depends on how many amps an how big a wire.

Voltage drop has to do with the distance you are running. Above or below ground makes no difference. It is the length of 200-250 feet that is your issue.

I don’t think the voltage drop would make a difference whether it was below grade or aerial. It is my understanding that voltage drop is more about displacement. That being said all you would have to do is oversize the cable to allow for the voltage drop.
Just a novice here, so someone correct me if I’m wrong.

Anything under 288 and you’ll be fine.

Why is that needed?

It's going to be longer... So they will put a transformer on a pole somewhere along this run?

It's very rural, has to go across an adjacent property with no service

Is it above ground or below ground?
Make up your mind...

What everyone said about distance dropping voltage over the line is correct
Have you run the numbers of just installing a big propane tank and a quality generator? It is just a camp, but i dont know how often it will actually be used.

Run the fricking thing above ground without digging.

No I haven't... But I will certainly look into it. Thanks

Sure.. I was trying to avoid having limbs fall on it because it is heavily wooded.

Well...seems like a stretch. I’d rather do upkeep every few years than thinking about what you’re doing.
If you have the time and means; dig my friend.

I also recommend putting this topic on the outdoor board
They will have good ideas on how to power camps in densely wooded areas

Fine by me; but I ain’t digging shite if I don’t have to...

Im sure power company would have to dig if it connects to their transformer
They have to call 811 to check for any other rogue utilities, etc.

You’re debating between aesthetics and time/ budget. Doesn’t really matter in the end as long as the camp is powered.
Just me.
Good luck...

Correct. They would be the ones to do it. It would cost me a little more upfront but I was thinking it would be better in the long run if it were underground
