Omar Bradley, commander US troops on D Day, watches landings on Omaha from USS Augusta, 5 miles from shore. He's considering pulling off 29th and 1st Divisions right now. "We're being butchered like hogs" is one radio message from the beach

Robert Capa arriving back at USS Samuel Chase with wounded. He's at the rear of the landing craft. Just 11 of his images could be printed, but they were glorious.

A few hundred men on Omaha Beach have found the courage to run into bullets that “fell like rain.” There is no equality in war. The few rise far beyond what most can stomach and endure. They win battles. They save the day. They have saved the Allied invasion.

The 101st Airborne and 4th Division have linked up behind Utah Beach. Airborne and seaborne have connected. A big moment on D Day. There is widespread confusion and disorganization in all the drop zones. But groups of men are adapting, getting the job done. The plan at Utah has worked brilliantly with less than 200 casualties on Utah - the great success story of D Day for the US. Exits from Omaha have been secured thanks to naval close support. Juno has been deadly for the Canadians now in fierce street fighting. Gold and Sword beaches have also been secured. The push inland has begun with seaborne and airborne about to link up at Pegasus Bridge. There has yet to be a concerted German counterattack but it is on its way. Over 100000 Allied soldiers are in Normandy spread over 50 miles of coastline. There have been hundreds of French civilian fatalities. Only now is Hitler informed.

Not one of the five exits off Omaha have been taken by frontal assault. Outflanked, shelled to pieces by the navy. Bradley is now deciding that US troops should stay. Just a few hundred men are leading the way out of hell, changing history right now.

The British are fighting through Ouistreham, pushing toward Caen. At least 1,500 Brits have lost their lives today

Michael Daly, who dropped out of West Point to become a private, now approaching Omaha Beach, will earn 2 Silver Stars in Normandy, a Medal of Honor in April 1945 in Nuremberg as a company commander, aged just 20.

The gliders at Pegasus Bridge. It's now 2pm. Lovat's commandos have linked up with the Ox and Bucks at the bridge and are now moving to the Orne heights, furthest to the east on the 50-mile Allied beachhead.

Lt Ray Nance, the only officer from Bedford, Virginia, in the 29th Inf. Div. to make it home. Lying now with a heel shot off on Omaha Beach, traumatized, having lost 19 friends from his hometown.

Omaha Beach, 6 June 1944. By the great Robert Capa. He has now collapsed and lies on a ship beneath a blanket with a tag on his toe - "exhaustion case."

All five exits from Omaha Beach are now secure. Here's the map carried by the first American officer to lead men off the beach, Lt. John Spalding, E Co. 16th Inf. Big Red One. He's now under intense counter-attack

Lookup the military forensic study on Omaha Beach. One of crew is still alive. He gives the most accurate view of the disaster on the beach. One their first four trips to beach, not one of the soldiers made it out of the boat alive. He was given the task of dragging the bodies from the hinge of the ramp so that the boat could raise the ramp, go to hospital ship, empty the bodies and get back in line to reload and go again. When they got to point where every fifth man got onto the beach, there was hope.

Its impossible for today’s people to comprehend the horror and sacrifice of our war fighters back then. I am always amazed at the bravery and being so far away from home. To die in a foreign land. I always respect and honor those brave souls

Lord Lovat, circled in red, now leads British commandos ashore on Sword Beach. His legendary piper, Billlin, is playing bagpipes.
The Germans did not shoot Bill Millin because they thought he was insane. He died in 2010.

When I retire aI am going to read and scam every WWII letter that I have... I love reading about times then.

I’ve always wanted to read Bedford Boy
Great book. I was on work road trip to NY and spent the night in Beford. They had copies of the book for sale at the hotel so I bought one. It’s a great read, although tragic, story.
