Life during the '80s and '90s in that area was pretty awesome.

My mom lived off of North Sherwood in the late 80s and early 90s. I used to walk 1/2 mile down the road to the store when I was over there. It wasn't anything like it is now.

I mean, I used to walk around mid city NOLA in the 80s and 90s, too

But one of the people I know moved out of Monticello in the late 80s bc of a shooting. Not sure if that’s true, but that’s what he said.

I lived in Monticello from the '80s to the mid-'90s. I don't ever remember any murders during that time period. Suicides, yeah. It definitely started its move toward sketch by the mid-'90s, though.

I had a couple of good friends in Monticello in high school. We hung out at their house all the time in the early to mid 90s. It was fine.

I guess you could see the writing on the wall by the mid 90s though. Much like my childhood neighborhood. The ghetto just moved down Hooper Road in that case.

Monterrey was in good shape. LA Sport and Fitness had a solid clientele base. Some good commercial/industrial growth along S. Choctow to Cortana. Villa del Rey was still a good neighborhood.

You mean The Wallbanger?

What was that pizza place across the street that was pretty good? I suck at remembering names.

Hmmm - were there break ins or other crimes?

I’ve only known BR since 2005 (been told a time or two that I helped ruin BR) - not sure why these people would tell me those neighborhoods were bad back then

The multiple posters in this thread that grew up in these neighborhoods aren’t sure why they would tell you that either

That's a long-arse street that spans two neighborhoods. Knew a shitload of Brians, but I'm trying to remember one from that particular street.

Yeah, the original Wallbanger nee LA Sports and Fitness nee Spectrum.

Think the pizza place housed several different franchises over the years: Corleone's Pizza, Godfather's, and maybe a Johnny's?

That's ALL the way down at N. Sherwood. More Park Forest East. Where did he go to school?

There were definitely property crimes and burglaries, but I would say on par with any other big neighborhood like Shenandoah, Broadmoor, Tara, etc.

They're probably misremembering the actual time span. There's no question about Monticello went to hell. Just a matter of the accurate timeframe. Seems to have been off by 10-15 years.

Nah I'm talking about Monticello Blvd off Greenwell Springs. That used to be a Regions by the entrance. No clue if it still is, and it wasn't Regions back then but I think it was a bank. Left on Catalina and a few houses down.

Not sure why I remember this since it's been 30 years but I could pull in the driveway today

Monticello crew here

Monticello crew member checking in.

Family who built the restaurant in question lived across the street from me.

Edit: just read the entire thread…I really wish we could have an 80’-90’s reunion for kids that grew up in Park Forest, Monticello, and Central.
