2008 Nissan Altima Coupe 2.5 S w/ 65,000 miles - listed at $5995 or 2004 BMW 530i w/ 67,000 miles - listed at $5900
Any input on either car?

If you're comparing those two, I don't think you can afford the maintenance bill whenever the 530i breaks down.
ETA: The 530i seems like a pretty good deal. Average price for that car with similar miles is around $8,000.
My sister has an 2008 328i and I do most of the maintenance for her and I can't wait until she sells that car. Last thing I changed for her was her front suspension parts; bill from a shop would have been $2000, I bought the parts and changed it myself for $600.

I second this. I had a 1989 325i a long time ago when I was still in the Army. Kept it when I got out and just got too expensive to keep up with the maintenance. It was a fun car though.

The average annual repair cost is $758 for the 530i and $386 for the Altima. I wouldn't say thats too drastic of a difference. I drive a Jeep now so I'd say just about anything is better.

If you do get the 530i, I would find a reputable and honest BMW mechanic that won't rape you as bad as the stealership.
ETA: If the car is to get you from point A to B, I would get the 2008 Altima since it's 4 years newer.

You really don't want either one. The Nissan has a CVT transmission which is know for failure and is about $4K to rebuild. They don't last very long either, usually about 100K.

Yup. Mine went out at 110K. Rebuilt it only to have my fricking AC compressor go out a few weeks ago. Car's a piece of crap.

Wow I read up b/c my friend owns a Nissan. Sure enough A LOT of tranny problems noted.

That website you linked has almost every car under two stars. It is a complaint website.
Nissan had problems with the cvt in the early 2000s. They extended warranties to 120,000. The cvts are now much better.
The reason you see a higher number of complaints is because Nissan put these in practically every car they make. From the Veras to the Maxima to the Muranos.
There are a freaking ton of these cvts on the road. With that said, I would not get the 2004 Nissan cvt.
I have owned a lot of high mileage Altimas and ironically the only transmission problem was not on a cvt. It was a loose solenoid ground on my 1998 automatic.
