No shite. I don't like tennis, animals or kids playing either. While we are at it I don't like bussing people to the mall and back, bikes, old people or people who aren't employed.

Lower the prices, I would play a lot more if it weren't $40 bucks a round on courses like Webble Beach.

So how does Florida do it? Seems like they have a golf course every couple of miles no matter what part of the state your in. An even better example myrtle beach? That city has more courses than neighborhoods it seems like.

Selling the unprofitable courses would benefit all. Could open up areas to new construction and businesses generating more tax revenue.
Winbourne Ave. is not exactly a hub of economic activity.

I like your sarcastic crap. Fact is, this country needs to lean up and folks need to grab some self responsibility and take care of themselves. Its not the collectives job to pay for those who cant...well liberals haven't brought us there yet.
And all those things you listed you can very well do, at privately owned places not subsidized by tax payers.

none of these courses make money either. Disney loses several million a yr on golf. They have already sold off two courses and leased the others to Arnold Palmer golf management.

My free consulting off the cuff spitball ideas as a dude who is from the area.
Raise fees at Santa Maria. Offer a membership plan for just that course.
Make some kind of tournament system and have all the rounds at Beaver to bring up their dues.
Close Clark and move 1st tee to City. Possibly turn city into an 18hole par 3 course.
I'd close Dumas and Howell but I know that won't happen until they are desperate.

They should have bought Sherwood
If the government wasn't in the business of picking winners and losers to begin with, Sherwood might still be open...

And the government is responsible for Sherwoods debt how?

Just booked a trip to Myrtle Beach for this summer. Was a little surprised to learn Myrtle Beach has lost close to half of the courses they had at their peak in the early 2000's. The bottom line is that every place around the country that was oversaturated with courses has lost some.

I think there are too many golf courses in Baton Rouge as it is with the majority of them being lower quality courses. Cut a couple courses, upgrade a few of the ones you still have in operation. Leaves us with some lower quality/lower fee courses, some mid quality/mid fee courses and some nicer quality/higher fee courses. When I say nicer, I don't mean anything crazy fancy, just a course with smooth greens, tight fairway and rough that is kept up with. Gives everyone with every income level a course they can play at.

BREC commissioners receive no compensation.

Money for financing land purchases, construction of facilities, maintenance, and the operation of many varied programs is obtained from taxes voted by the citizens of East Baton Rouge Parish and from income from facilities, concessions and programs. Other funds come from local governmental agencies and the Federal Government.

Plus the black community would throw a huge fit closing a historically black golf course.
Howell Park is not historically black. That part of town was overwhelmingly white until 30 years ago.

St. George says they would close them automatically regardless.

If golf courses lose money, then why are there golf courses?

I've played Sherwood probably 3 times, so I'm not a passionate supporter or anything. My point is that you have this bloated system of city courses and it hurts similarly situated courses that are not owned by the city. Subsidizing these courses with taxpayer funds really hurts the other courses.

I think we have this set up. Low- City, Howell, Dumas. Mid- Webb. High- Beaver and SM.
