Any tips for someone who has bought and sold things online, but never watches and never anything quite that valuable?

Diligence. Never want the deal so bad that you can't walk away. Get the admin from whatever place you buy from to do a check on the seller. If it's a place like Chrono24 or Bob's you can pay for an authenticity check from them. I can give you a ton more when you get ready to actually pull the trigger.
