To the O.P., you may be getting confused because of all the different places people are referring to.
Dirty 6th
This is probably the section that most people refer to when you hear people from out of town talking about "6th Street." It is between Congress Ave and Red River. You'll find lots of young people at these bars and tourists. You'll also find lots of loud music, sometimes live.
West 6th This is a more low key area with an older crowd...25-40. This is west of Congress.
East 6th This is a low key area with a slightly older crowd and hipsters. You'll find dive bars here as well as some artsy bars like Eastside Showroom. It's worth checking out, even if you hate hipsters.
Red River This is north of 6th Street. There are lots of cool bars here that are worth checking out. Just browse around and pop into one that looks interesting. Some may charge cover if there's a good band playing, but I think most don't.

Thank you SUB that clarification helped a lot! How about this... This question goes to all posters. Make me your itinerary for a bachelor party wknd you would plan in Austin. Leave out golf (except perhaps topgolf) and the lake. Go...

Has club XTC been mentioned yet?
Some mexican cab driver convinced us to go there while I was in Austin on a Bach party. Guy stole the bachelors phone, left us out there in bfe and got paid by the club when he dropped us off. Place is like the illusions of austin

I forgot to mention that 4th St (between Congress and Lavaca) has some cool places too. If you are looking for live music, Cedar Street Courtyard always seems to have a good crowd and good cover bands. It's a good place to end the night, but there will likely be a cover.
I assume you'll be in Austin for 2 nights.
Friday afternoon / evening
- 5PM Head over to Hops & Grain brewery. Do a tour at 5PM and hang out and drink / pregame. Find a place to eat near there.
-7PM Catch a Master Pancake Theater show at Alamo Drafthouse on 6th (if they are doing one that night). Master Pancake is a comedy group who sit in the front row and make fun of movies. It's one of the best things to do in Austin IMO. With a group as big as yours, I'd make sure to get tickets on Monday before the show (reserved seats) or as early as possible.
- After that, take a tour of dirty 6th and Red River. Bar hop the rest of the night.
Saturday
- See some of the city outside of downtown
- You could rent a boat and hang out on Lake Travis
- Go to the Cathedral of Junk LINK
- Check out Zilker Park
- Barton Springs Pool
- Go to Torchy's Tacos or LA BBQ for lunch.
- Check out Rainey St for night-time food and drinks.

like the hops and grain idea and Alamo drafthouse idea as it is very unique and something none of us have done before. definitely gonna do torchy's as that's all I hear about outside of bbq. im hoping that nearer the time we go I can find a good cover band or country artist (red dirt) that will be performing somewhere downtown that Saturday night. Thanks for all the info and suggestions!

I have another question. I think for Saturday night of our trip it would be cool to get a table/space at a bar/nightclub near the dance floor with bottle service. I know this route generally isn't cheap but any suggestions for places to go for this? I have looked at Rio and it seems like it might work. Looking for anybody with experience in this matter.

Rio (
) might be the only place left in town that stil does bottle service
.....and the titter you're looking for where anything goes (for a price) is P10

I have seen where other besides rio do but I just want to be in the right spot for it. judging by your emoticon, i'd say you think rio is vomit worthy... Any other suggestions?

not really. I would never willingly go to any night club
Rio is nice, it's definitely not a dump - it's just full of douche and pretentious fricks (IMO)...as far as I know, its the only place downtown that's still doing the whole dance club, bottle service thing
but, I'm old, I've been in Austin for almost 20 years now, and no longer in the bar industry, you should probably get advice from someone who still enjoys that kinda stuff.
but Perfect10 definitely has the floozies with the looset morals of all the titters

Hops and Grain Brewey Tour is pretty cool. Small brewery, but they have great beer.

Sub nailed it. That's a perfect Austin trip.

Need a recommendation for a restaurant for friday night when we get in near our hotel (omni) downtown. Group is gonna be 10-12... groom said "no nice dinners" but still wanting sit down. Thought about possibly Iron Cactus? Party bus picking us up at 9pm.
Also, wanna get bbq downtown area possibly saturday late lunch. Recommendation here? Looked at Stubbs, Lamberts, Iron works... Franklin wont be happening and food trucks are only other recommendations i've gotten so need some opinions.

heard nothing but good things about la bbq but being that its a stand in line place and we will be hungover i'm thinking an indoor place will be more up our alley. any suggestions there?
