How hard is it to be an adult and say “hey, we recommend you look elsewhere for representation” ?

I try. I send them all intake emails to fill out and I do respond to 100% of those.
Sometimes they won't fill out the electronic intake.
Sometimes it seems likely that they are the type who won't let you out before the 30-minute mark, and they're very likely to interpret what they hear as legal advice and threaten to put me in the box that way. One big sign is if they refuse to list an email during intake. They don't want stuff in writing that goes against their pre-conceptions and they just want to "talk to a lawyer" to reinforce their pre-conceived beliefs (regardless of what the lawyer says).
