From my experience with mushrooms the experience that you have is definitely dependent somewhat on the mindset and emotional state that you are in when taking it.

Terence McKenna called them machine elves. Like robotic glowing elves that seem very interested in the fact that you are visiting their realm.

I’ve never seen elves but I’d think you need to get past ego death first, which I’m sure is every bit as terrifying as the real thing.
