Wkyt news
Known for its old-time radio hour, Lexington’s Woodsongs brought the gift of music to hurricane-battered Asheville, North Carolina, over the weekend.
“What a beautiful gift to people a few months ago lost everything,” said singer-songwriter Michael Johnathon. “Woodsongs has reached out to its audience and what an amazing gift for the people who lost everything in the storms of Helene.”
Their gift was more than 1,400 donated musical instruments. Volunteers polished, repaired, tuned, and put new strings on violins, guitars, banjos, and more on the campus of Warren Wilson College.
Long before the giveaway started, dozens of people lined up.
“We can’t rebuild bridges. We can’t rebuild homes. We can’t put roofs on. We can’t restore cars or other stuff destroyed. But we can restore the music of the front porch,” said Johnathon.
Johnathon was on local radio this morning. Told the story of a mother who wouldn't leave her home because of a disabled child. When the water got above his wheelchair, she grabbed a guitar case, and her child and use the case as a flotation device before they were rescued.
She came to the event, and they gave her a Martin guitar worth thousands of dollars.
