seems like that would be a logistical problem to out in the desolate boonies and kill an elk?

Believe it or not, Alaska Airlines flies there. Military base shutdown decades ago but theres still a few people there. Lots of scientists and sportsman go there too.

we saw so much wildlife everywhere when we were there a couple of years ago (summer,) makes me think if “hunting” is the right term?

Yeah, some of these islands locally see the annual deer-pocalypse, its unreal how many deer there is out there. When the snows chase them down to the beaches/lowland, theyre everywhere.

Bears are similar just with seasons reversed.

I want to go back and get out a bit more in the wilderness type areas, friend of mine reired a couple of years ago and has a fishing charter outfit up there, he’s invited me up there but has warned me that there are just about zero creature comforts at his camp

I will be there next week for vacation. Any recommendations for hikes, walks, or restaurants? We will be halibut fishing out of Homer.

There are some beautiful areas just on the road system, but when you dont mind flying or floating its like a new world.

One of the most incredible scenes of my life came at the MacLaren Summit on Denali Highway late one August. Looks like a different planet.

Depends on what you want to spend. Small ships (more adventure oriented) are the best way but expensive.

Most of the main lines come here. It just depends on the itinerary you want.

I’m up for that, that rafting trip you recommended was a blast, once we were approaching the end and reached “civilized” water the guide asked if anyone wanted to jump in, I said hell yeah, four wheeling out in the middle of nowhere was pretty cool too

We did Celebrity 8 or so years ago and highly recommend it. It’s a step up from a line like Carnival or Royal Caribbean but not the most expensive. Great experience. We ended up going 2 years in a row and want to go back. If you do it, do it right and get an aft balcony. Make the splurge. Trust me, worth every penny.

What’s it like? Do people know SEC ball or is it just all NFL fans up there? How’s the food?

The AF folks I know who have been stationed there loved it for football season. The could start watching early, watch a full day's worth of games and still have time left before bed.

Southeast, AK. Been here for most of 30 years.

Have you ever been to Barrow AK? That place has always fascinated me when I read about it.

Havent. I understand they still have to use honey buckets to go to the bathroom though.
