My second guess would have been a European Wasp or a Paper Wasp (paper wasp below) but the abdominal spots generally means yellow jacket.

I feel like I pick up a lot of Jeopardy Answers reading random threads in this forum. Good post.

It's a hover fly. They don't sting. Males have a slightly different stripe pattern and hover flies differ a bit due to the regions they are found. There's a shitload of them here in Louisiana in the summer.LINK

No, it is not.

Hoverflies have very dull or non-existent yellow on the thorax. Also, no spots on the abdomen. Flies also have thin legs - the front legs on the OP's wasp are very typical wasp legs. The front legs on the hoverfly have several bends, not just one as in the case of a typical wasp. The eye of a fly is different than that of a wasp. Hoverflies also have very short antennae.

Note the thin legs and very dark yellow on the hoverfly:

Note the yellowjacket legs and how different they are than those of a fly (this is an eastern yellowjacket that rarely has abdomen spots):

The OP's photo shows the wasp leg, not a fly leg:

ETA: The OP's insect also has the wasp waist (e.g. almost none).

I'm not going to argue. The link you posted looks vastly different than the pics in this link. There is a lot of variation among hover or flower flies. The legs here look much thicker than the ones in your pic and resemble the ones in the op. The op pic is of a mangled wingless burned looking bug. Angle of pic is odd too.may distort "waist". Eyes do look more wasp like though.

Japanese Giant hornet. Very deadly.

Not really in case it wasn't obvious.

It seriously does look like some kind of hornet or bee. I'm assuming the wings got knocked off when it was killed.

Yellow jacket is probably a good call, especially considering the assumption that OP is somewhere in the south. I know we have them here in louisiana.
