im in the midst of becoming one
just did the interview a few days ago and awaiting to hear back to see if i made the cut for their academy in april…entry pay is respectable and working 10-15 days out of the month is a bonus
if i don’t get this GS job by that time i’m going all in as a FF

had a very good friend who joined the Air Force. Was a firefighter in the Air Force. Came out and had a long career with the Seattle Fire Department.
He can do both. Spend 6 years seeing other parts of the world and receiving a free education in Fire Sciences
This is the right answer. Go military first, get field-related experience in a fire/EMS MOS, get out and get free schooling. An honorable discharge gets you bonus points in a lot of municipal civil service testing, which can be the difference between getting hired or getting passed over in the more competitive places like Houston, Dallas, Ft. Worth. Hell, I was competing against over 1000 other applicants just for Garland and Mesquite back in the early 2000's.
There's no better career, IMO. I've been on a few depts in NY, LA, and TX since 2001. I've missed it every day I wasn't on a dept.
