New Deal got us out of the depression.

My old man was about as Republican as you got but gave FDR full credit for the PWA and WPA and its effect to train unskilled labor on much needed infrastructure and create long term skilled workers for skilled (better paying) jobs. After WWII that was one thing he wanted therm to bring back and make permanent.

Thought every man out of high school should spend next two years
a) military service
or
b) peace corp
or
c) what became Americorp (a merger of PWA + WPA + projects to build US infrastructure)

Thought all 3 taught respect and giving back to something bigger than yourself (narcissist need not apply).

I agree with your dad about two years mandatory public service of some sort.

FDR used the Great Depression to enact all kinds of socialist programs that we're stuck with to this day. It's not a new thing for Dems to make use of every crisis to advance socialist policies.
