Japan was granted control of the Marshall Islands (former German possessions) by the Versailles Treaty. They had bases in the area of Earhart's last known location, which leads to speculation of their involvement. There are eyewitness reports by natives of seeing Earhart in Japanese custody, as well as claims that Marines discovered Earhart artifacts on Saipan after the US invasion. The veracity of all this is unproven, but Japan did have motive, means and opportunity to make her disappear if they thought she was on a reconnaissance mission.

Very doubtful. If she were in Japanese custody it would've made world headlines very quickly. The Japanese would not have kept this a secret, especially due to the rising tensions between them and the U.S.
