At face value, I don't disagree with any of that. Like I said, I know I'm probably being presumptuous, and I am making several leaps. I am imagining a situation where a young man or teenager was caught with some amount of marijuana. In my view it is natural for a young person to try to experiment and probably make some bad decisions.
Thinking of sending the kid to rehab as a solution for that situation seems pretty ludicrous to me. Rehab is for people who actually have addiction problems. It's performing surgery when a band aid would fix it.
This is of course all speculation.
ETA: Jeez. Well, that answered that. Good luck to OP. I hope all works out.

Good to see you back. I've only read the last few pages.
Again, I want to recommend the Shoulder in Spanish Fort. Can't speak highly enough of that place for a man or young man that needs some help in a structured environment to help themselves. At the end of the day, it is about helping yourself. They offer structure and accountability and the people that go into the residency program there often create strong bonds and friendships that last after they leave.
Only problem might be this:
quote:
ONLY potential clients who are incarcerated, or who live in a county in which there is no mental
health facility available, may download the following screening material. If neither of these
exceptions apply, the paperwork will not be accepted for potential admission.
Also, he would have to have a job or be able to obtain one within 10 days of being admitted.

I can recommend Dr Jose Calderon. You don't necessarily need to put him in rehab. Hook him up with an outpatient appointment with Dr Calderon in New Orleans. He's a master of the motivational interview (he doesn't ask "why do you do heroin?" He asks "how do you think your doing heroin affects you? Your father? Your mother?..") He is far from confrontational. He is a fantastic addiction psychiatrist. He may agree with rehab. He may refer you to someone closer, better. Bottom line, an appointment with him would be well worth your time.
For the record, I was trying to find his clinic's number and came across the website for the first time. I think it's quite cheesy, but I can assure you that the guy is great- I spent 6 weeks working with him on an inpatient unit, and he's a genuinely fantastic human being.

Look up ibogaine
Or the vivitrol shot. Once a month and you literally can't get high

Heroin - I suggest Palmetto for 90 days but usually ends up being more.
This. He doesn't need to be in BR. And he probably doesn't need to come back to BR for a long time after he gets out. 30 day programs are not long enough, even if he wanted to quit. It's just insurance BS.
I've been to family counseling with an addict at St. Christopher's in Baton Rouge. That place would make me want to do drugs. And this is just my experience, but I don't know anyone who went there who's still sober. Everyone I know who went through Palmetto is sober. Again just my experience. Damn, I seem to know a lot of people who went to rehab.

ST C is in the ghetto on top of that
But if he addicted to H then he definitely needs to go somewhere. It takes the mind about 30 days just to get out of the "fog" so to speak.

goes to drugs and the dealers give it to him on credit.
this may sound like too much tough love, but let him get his arse whipped, they won't beat him too bad because they need him too, your giving him money is enhancing the problem, he, like any kid, needs to learn that there are consequences for actions, not being condescending, best of luck

I think this every private rehab facility. Palmetto has rigorous paperwork, BB tests, meetings with your small group and with the main head psychologist, conference calls with your family, family day, etc etc
its pretty intense stuff IMO.

Couldnt be more true. Get out of that environment and start over.

There is living proof in this thread that states this is very true. If the OP is serious about getting his boy clean and living a normal life while learning to be a man, Palmetto is the place to do so. If he wants to piss around and put a band-aide on a gash, go the 30 day route.

Sucks to hear that. It took me to overdose on heroin to realize how fricking stupid I was. Been clean ever since.

He runs a subacute addiction inpatient service and an outpatient clinic. Motivational interviewing is quite common among addiction specialists; I did not mean to make it seem like he was unique in that respect. He is quite mindful of it, though, in every setting. And an outpatient office visit is always a much cheaper option that opens up many doors, including a 30-90 day program. Once at a 30-90 day program, you've kind of missed the boat on a whole host of other options that would've been useful up front.
The best care, in almost any setting, starts with being followed by someone in the outpatient setting who is competent and complete who isn't scared to refer when he isn't capable of taking care of the patient himself. He's just the best I know in NOLA, and I, unfortunately, don't know anyone in BR (merely from a lack of knowing people. Not suggesting there aren't good ones there).

I went through STC in 08 and almost everyone I went through with is still sober. It was an amazing program. However they have had several major staff changes since and Im not sure how their graduates are turning out now. Most of the staff has changed on every level unfortunately. The Program Director at the time I went through is now at AAC in Lafayette.

Hopeful Doc, are you in a position to ask this person if he can recommend somebody in BR?
Posted on 9/26/14 at 2:02 pm to MBclass83
if you have good insurance, it will cover most if not all of palmetto. i think i only paid 3k of the 30,000 it costs to go there
