Grant did drink during the war but he seemed to do it privately and in between campaigns. He'd go off somewhere with his staff and go on benders before returning to his headquarters. These benders never happened while the army was out on campaign, however. His staff was very good at keeping his mind off alcohol when it needed to be fixed on the task at hand.
