My mom bought a computer and she asked the clerk if it was up to date. He made the mistake of telling her it would be outdated when she took it home. She had me set it up for her but then never touched it because “it was outdated”. I couldn’t convince her the man was just exaggerating how fast computers change. Nowadays I think it was just something she wanted till she got it.

I had a Commodore 64 with the Disk way later when you could get them at the discount places. I really liked that machine. I wish I wouldn't have given it away. I sure remember the LOAD "*",8,1.

Mainframe machines from the late 60's, IBM, Control Data and Univac. The "server room" of its day. Accounting and payroll apps were their bread and butter, scientific and engineering applications secondarily. IBM made a fortune renting them.

My old boss worked for IBM in the late 60’s and early 70’s. He said if most of the salesguys in the mainframe and early 36 days were making 80k per year. All they would do is take orders and do the paperwork. Most days they left the office at 2pm because they filled their daily sales quotas.
