Lol…. Google pick pocket videos. They are pretty good at what they do. Combine a congested area, alcohol, loud environment and you create a prime opportunity for the thieves to go to work.

Like i said, if you want to leave your phone hanging out your back pocket, then you're an idiot. I'm not even a professional pick pocketer and i used to take my friends giant arse check book wallets out of their back pocket at school all the time.
I seriously doubt these criminals were devising professional pick pocketed schemes to steal these. They were just looking for extremely easy targets, as in idiots with their phones hanging out their back pockets, or idiots leaving them in the chair they were sitting in to go catch a 2 cent bead or disgusting stuff animal.

Implement the punishment from the mid east.
Chop off a hand and they wont be a pickpocket. Maybe they will until they get caught a second time.
