The rankings provide a good starting point for students trying to compare schools. The four overall rankings – National Universities, Liberal Arts Colleges, Regional Universities and Regional Colleges – are based on factors that indicate academic quality, such graduation rates and faculty resources.
graduation rates can be fudged
I'd like to see how they gauge "faculty resources"
either way, LSU has slipped in both regards.
There has been an exodus of talents, federally research granted faculty since the Jindal Higher Ed revenue model flip.
LSU used to be a majority state funded campus but it is now a majority tuition funded campus. That transition lead to some lean times causing faculty to leave for greener pastures. LSU is now settling into their new revenue model and I expect them to move back up in the rankings in the coming years. Their new "holistic" admissions policy brought in more students than ever before leading to higher operating budgets to focus on improvements.

quote:For sure. Bama was in the 70s like 5 years ago, and they stopped doing everything to get a higher ranking. It is probably a better school now than it was then, but it somehow dropped probably more than any other school in the country. LSU and Ole Miss arent Harvard, but theyre a lot better than a ton of schools that play the rankings game.
This year, Howard and FSU are particularly bizarre. Alabama suddenly isn't in favor anymore after years of playing the rankings like a fiddle.
