That's why a small (and I mean small) part of me thinks Payton might be good for doughnut boy. I don't like the hire, but after last season can it get any worse? We just cannot afford to spend 3 years on this douche without definite production. Believe me, I pray I am wrong and he turns this defense around and makes us a respectable unit. Doesn't have to be all pro, just respctable and compliment the offense. Hell, if he can do that, lunch is on me.

I couldn't be happier. Hated Williams, and Spags was a bust before he was fired at STL.

I will eat crow if we don't see increased pressure on QB, and better LB play. We still need to do something with the D backfield to have any kind of realy good defense.

I think the D will be shite no matter who is coaching, maybe they won't be record setting shite, with scheme fitting the personnel. Until they find another cover corner and a couple of safeties it will be tough.

a few years ago when the Saints brought it in Greer and Sharper, it made a big difference.

time for some more moves like that. but it won't be easy with the cap space available.

the defense didn't do a bad job of getting turnovers really. they ranked #12 in takeaways.

But hell the Bears led the league in takeaways and didn't even make it into the playoffs. The Steelers allowed the fewest yards in the league and they didn't make the playoffs either.

the main thing I hope for is a better run defense. Watching those games against Carolina were the worst. I know teams had some trouble with that read/option bullshite but watching the Saints defense playing against it was like watching a high school team defending it for the first time ever. I thought that they would play them better the second time around since they had played ATL and TB so much better in the rematches but shite...they looked just as bad except for that pick six by Vilma.

I almost think you just have to have the defensive end tackle the QB no matter what. Just crash down on him and see how many more times they run that BS.

+1 Paddy.
That must be done by somebody every damn time.

Payton said they would spend a great deal of time on defencing the read option this off season.

Anyone know how Ryan's def. fared against it?

It's a mixed bag. They lost both times against the Skins, held the Panthers to 14 points, and lost to Seattle, although I don't think they were running the read-option quite yet.

Hell yes.

Since we are going to be running the 3-4 now, maybe teams like the Panthers won't get as many good looks from our D to run it as much.

they were catching our defense in the nickel last year and were just teeing off. Once you get by the DE, the LB would be in a pinch because that is just too much ground for a LB to cover when there are only two of them out there to begin with. Next thing you know, one of the safeties are missing the tackle and then finally somebody like Greer is making the tackle 20 yards down field.

the Panthers also have a new OC now...Mike Shula....that is music to my ears.

I don't care if they hire Jabba the Hut as long as the defense gets better.

I think that is pretty much who you got!
