I wouldn't say clueless, but they are DEFINITELY not football people.

And these are the guys doing the grades for PFF. That's why I stress they are at best guidelines. They definitely don't know down to down what's happening each play. That much I can take away from the 3 videos I watched of them.

One thing they did nail, which was blatantly obvious to anyone with eyes, was Newton constantly overthrowing receivers, and the failed project of them trying to get tall arse receivers he can't overthrow. The outcome was he still found a way.

The only thing that they mentioned, that I didn’t like was the “New Orleans is where linebackers go to die” statement. I felt everything else was pretty straight on, and in all honesty we haven’t had a hit at linebacker since Vilma left. So, I get where they can make such a blanket statement concerning the position.

Vacarro did stink it up in the slot and Streif was better than the fan base gave him credit for at times. I don’t recall any mention of the Meredith signing, even though the video was released yesterday.

Aside from Anthony, what highly anticipated linebackers have the Saints signed recently?
I think Robertson and Teo both have played better than I expected. Klein is average but I don’t think anyone expected him to be Ray Lewis. Anzalone was known to have injury issues.

I must have missed where they signed Kuechly and he disappeared

Yeah the "where LBs go to die" comment was utter bullshite. We haven't really invested much into proven LBs and only took 1 in the first 3 rounds of the draft since Payton got here iirc (unless you're counting Kik but he's more DE).

The rest have been "promising" backups or low end starters from other teams. Davis is the first big LB we've signed in forever (if you count Lofton then since 2012).

I'm not really taking issue with their LB diss. It was seemingly a throw-away generalization for a repeatedly under-whelming unit.

And while last season was solid/effective, even the Saints brass knew to take a chance on FA Davis this year, with many of us also speculating they may draft a LBer in the 1st rd of the draft.

Bottomline, it's pretty obvious, even to outsiders, the Saints haven't really had a competent/effective set of LBs since Vilma & Fujita.

Shanle
Clark
Dunbar
Anthony
Laurenitis
Lofton
Haralson
Stupar

Not a star among them, imo. Maybe, you could make a case for a Lofton/Galette duo, but Galette was basically a 3-4 edge rusher.

Yeah I didn’t really take issue and I get where they’re coming from. Just seemed a little lazy. It’s not like the Saints have been bringing in a ton of blue chip LB whose careers fell apart afterward. They aren’t Cleveland lol

I do because they didn't say we've had crappy LB play (which is true). They said LBs come here to die, implying they were better before they got here.

Davis is supposedly the best LB we'll have since Vilma. We haven't even had an elite, much less a high end, talent since he got hurt. It's all been midgrade or below and if anything guys have played above their level at times.

If they just said we've had very poor LB play I'd have no issue with it because I agree, but we haven't exactly been stocking the cabinets with high end stock. We've been shopping mostly wal-mart brand.

To each his own, but I still took the LB comment as no matter what the Saints have tried to fix LB play, nothing has worked (much like the attempted QB fixes & resulting failures in Cleveland...where QBs go to die).

Saints invest a 1st rounder & draft a promising prospect in Anthony...complete bust.
Saints sign Laurinaitis, the Rams' career leading tackler....goes to IR, then literally retires.
Saints bring in Lofton after a career year...LB unit still sucks & the Saints go 7-9 two out of the three years he is here.

Their larger point was issuing a buyer beware warning on Davis, who they obviously view as a one-year-wonder that now has to learn a 3rd defensive scheme in 3 years, implying don't be surprised if this fix doesn't work out again.

At least, that's they way I took it.

Davis was a star for the Jets in 2017.
97solo, 38asst, 13tfl, 5 sacks
Granted the Jets sucked offensively so he had more on field opportunity. With New Orleans' prolific offense, he may not fare as well statistically but none the less he will be a big upgrade. JMO

Oh, I believe Davis will be a great addition, Sway. The PFF guys in the video tho are not as optimistic.

Would be awesome if one of the top defenders drop to 27. LB, DT, or DE.

Yeah my semi-realistic preferred wishlist of those positions are LB Rahsaan Evans, DT Maurice Hurst (if his medical makes him fall) and DE Harold Landry (who could be around the 20s).

All three can affect the passer. All three upgrade each position.

You just never know how a player will perform in a new scheme with new personnel surrounding him. That’s the crapshoot with FA. That’s all they were saying.
