People should understand that the big rules changes came before Marino entered the NFL.

Limiting DBs hitting receivers at the line (early 70s)

Allowing open palm blocking by OL (late 70s)

You can make a case for more favorable rules when comparing Brees to Unitas and the TD record. Brees to Marino not so much.

until this year, Dan Fouts was the single season leader for passing yards per game with 320.3 in 1982 (didn't set any yardage records as that was a 9 game season)

Dan Marino set his record two years later.

Seems like a pretty pass-friendly period in NFL history to me.

They also showed a stat for ppl that pointed to rule changes that brees is averaging 92+ yards more per game than the NFL average and marino was low like in the 40s

The rule where if a receiver was GOING to catch the ball before being pushed OOB it is a reception was recent dropped.

in 1984, the average nfl team threw for 205.9 yards/game. marino threw for 317.8/game. Marino threw for 154% of the league average.

this year, the average nfl team throws for 228.2 yards/game. Drew is throwing for 339.1/game. That's good for 149% of the league average

that makes marino's year slightly better but it's nearly a wash... especially when you compare the rushing offense of the 84 Dolphins vs. the 2011 Saints.
