And I don't expect Woodson to be Sharper, but he is a freaking pro and would be the qb for our secondary. I doubt we'd see guys way out of position.

Good point.

Woodson is in almost the same exact position Sharper was in when he came here. Folks thought he was washed up and nothing left in the tank...we know how that played out.

Woodson and Seymour would be two excellent vets to bring in. Some of these guys just have to decide if they wanna play for a fraction of what they did previously or just hang it up.

I have a fresh name to look at-

WR Danario Alexander
He's RFA but only at original tender which was undrafted. (like if Ivory wasn't given a 2nd). SD only has the right to match any contract. With the Saints cap they cannot put an offer that the Chargers would be overwhelmed by. But they might be able to push it with future money.

The guy became Rivers #1 target by the end of the year. In the last 8 games he caught 34 passes for 597 yards, 17.8ypc, and seven touchdowns. He's 6-5, 217lbs and can stretch the field.

2 or 3 teams are supposedly thinking of plucking him.

Would be nice, but it seems they are happy with morgan's progress as the burner type WR with blocking skills. They may bring in a vet minimum guy for depth but thats probably about it as far as WR is concerned IMO.

True.

Wanted to add to blues that I'm sure they wanted him to be a LT just as they wanted PRob to start and Ingram to be a beast, but sometimes players fail to meet expectations. Remember Ellis? So you adjust your plan and put them where you think they can succeed.

And yeah he showed a little something in the brief time he was in at RT, but last time he was at LT he was worse than Bushrod.

Thanks for that blues. Honestly I think Henderson or Moss at vet minimum makes the most sense. The better ones on there won't play for the minimum but aren't must haves.

I keep throwing out this caveat though... How much did we see of 4th Rd pick Bushrod before he was inserted at starter? I don't think he had a single regular season rep before he took over the spot. Payton is also very big on Next Man Up.

Again, I'm not sold on Brown as the answer at all. Just saying what goes on with the team and those decisions is sometimes not readily apparent from the fans perspective. Who would have thought dlP would have been anything but a disaster being his 7th team stop in 3 years?

All true and good points. I just can't see Brown even having a shot there. Jones yes. Harris maybe. Definitely need a vet if we aren't drafting a first rounder though.

Jones seemed to be far and away the best out of Strief/Brown/Jones/Harris at RT last year before going down.

I'll be honest if Jones isn't one of the starting tackles it will only be because Strief is doing just enough and using his vet experience to keep his job at RT and because we have a vet or first rounder at LT.

You never answered the question: when did Brown play LT? I honestly don't know except for maybe pre-season.

my reply would be more like...

I'll be honest if Jones isn't one of the starting tackles it will only be because he's dealing with injuries again.

hey look- scouting reports from last year

Sorry I meant to reply and forgot when reading another post. It was in preseason and he was awful against backups. I think they tried him there the first two seasons.

I also seem to remember Bushrod getting hurt for a couple of series one game last year or the year before and he looked awful.

He's completely overmatched on that side, and despite his small size(even though that's what's keeping him from being good) his skills are better suited for RT.

blues, that is also true and I don't think Sean was just talking about Brown when saying he can't rely on a guy if he's always injured. I think that was directed at Brown, Jones, and Ivory.

yeah, that was about it for him. Nothing to get excited at all about. But again, we saw a lot less of the Bushdog before he was inserted as starter. Not worried. The answer(s) to choose from will prolly be crystal clear by the first day of camp.

No doubt they have a plan in mind which they may or may not have to adjust, bu I'm sure they've accounted for the different possibilities.

Could be we haven't signed a vet LT because we're waiting to see how the draft plays out. If we get a first round LT we probably won't sign a vet(unless they struggle in camp). If not I think it's likely we'll see one signed soon after the draft.

Hell which of these guys would not be a serious if not significant upgrade. Damn that is a lot of quality safeties. We need tto grab one so I am adding two to your List.

Safeties
Kerry Rhodes
Charles Woodson
Quintin Mikell
Usama Young
Nate Clements
Jim Leonhard
Sherrod Martin
Dawan Landry
Gearld Sensabaugh.

Larry Holder comes up with a list. Some of the same candidates-

Tackle Jared Gaither (6-9, 335) - The 27-year-old left tackle became a salary-cap casualty in San Diego last week and is probably the best left tackle on the market in a major position of need for the Saints. But something could be fishy on Gaither's end after being cut just one year after receiving a four-year, $24.6 million contract before the 2012 season.

Tackle Max Starks (6-8, 345) - You're starting to see a theme here with tackles as it's the primary position the Saints want to target at this point in free agency. The 31-year-old Starks doesn't appear to be re-signing with Pittsburgh.

Tackle Tyson Clabo (6-6, 329) - Teams reportedly are already after the recently released Falcons tackle with Dallas and Jacksonville interested in Clabo. The 31-year-old is more known for being a right tackle, but could be an option if the price is low for the tackle-troubled Saints. You can throw Eric Winston in the same boat as Clabo at this point.

Defensive ends Dwight Freeney (6-1, 268) and John Abraham (6-4, 263) - Remember when these two players were hot names on the market? Well the market has cooled off for these two once premier pass rushers.

The 33-year-old Freeney wouldn't seem like a good fit in New Orleans and could easily still end up in Denver with Peyton Manning. A source said before free agency opened that the Saints would ponder the nearly 35-year-old Abraham once the market cooled off, and it has.

Defensive lineman Richard Seymour (6-6, 317) - The 33-year-old has been successful in 4-3 and 3-4 defensive scheme. So versatility isn't an issue for Seymour. The Raiders cut ties with Seymour thanks to a hefty salary. Would the Saints like to have him? Probably so. It comes back to the cost.

Defensive tackle Casey Hampton (6-1, 325) - If the Saints are looking for a short-term fix at nose tackle, they could do worse than Hampton despite his age (36 in September). The five-time Pro Bowler knows the 3-4 defense, but obviously the Saints would only be looking for a one-year deal type of contract if there was any interest.

Cornerback Antoine Winfield (5-9, 180) - Winfield's agent said right after the Vikings cut the former All-Pro cornerback that he thought the Saints would be a good fit for Winfield. The Redskins are reportedly in the market for Winfield. The Saints flirted with veteran cornerbacks like Nnamdi Asomugha and Tracy Porter already.

Defensive back Charles Woodson (6-1, 202) - Thanks to the success of Darren Sharper, there always will be a fascination with bringing in a veteran with a slew of accolades for one last shot at a championship. For the Saints, the difference with Sharper and Woodson is that the Saints had an opening in 2009 at free safety. The Saints, for now, don't feel like there is an opening at safety.

On the safety front I've been saying Harper is going no where. So according to Holder I guess the Saints feel comfortable letting Jenkins and IAQ duel it out.

I don't see us pursuing Abraham at this point. He's light for a 3-4 end and never played 3-4 OLB (correct me if I'm wrong). Phillips would be the experienced OLB I think they'd pursue.

I think the CB pursuit is done. I think we pushed for Nnamdi because of Ryan and Porter because of famliarity. If they want another one still I think it'll be through the draft.

Again Hampton is not a good scheme fit, but if we could pull Seymour it would have the line set through starter and backup and even going 3 deep with the young guys.

Honestly I think unless a really good player wants to play for the minimum, I believe the Saints are done with FA until after the draft and will pick up vet minimum guys to fill any remaining holes.
