just curious, are you a heavy draftaholic? Don't think you'll find many scouts defining the difference between 6th and 7th Rders, especially at this point of the season. I'm just working on figuring who's top-middle-bottom of the 1st Rd so far.

Hey Blues,
What do you think of the LBs Clay and Alonso coming out of Oregon. Clay seems a little undersized, and limited athletically, but his instincts are off the charts. Im thinking he could go 5th-7th, and make a nice backup/ST players. Alonso, who played inside, has the better size and athleticism. I can see him going 3rd-4th, I'm just wondering if he can translate to the outside.

On Mingo-
Barkevious Mingo, DE/OLB, Junior, LSU (6060 E, 310 E and 4.90 E): After flashing the ability to make game changing plays in 2011, Mingo was expected to have a breakout 2012 season when he started from day one. However, despite flashing the athleticism that grabbed everyone’s attention a season ago, Mingo did not produce at a high level in 2012. Too often he was a beat late moving at the snap, stayed upright and high while rushing the passer, was stopped in his initial rush and pretty much stopped fighting to get to the quarterback when his initial attempt was thwarted. Additionally, after displaying explosive change of direction ability beating pass blockers inside and outside in 2011, he rarely displayed the ability to beat man with a secondary pass rush move. Often being out-weighed by 40+ pounds by offensive linemen, once they got their hands on him the play was generally over. They could stop his pass rush in its tracks and could tie him up and ride him out of the play on running plays at him. Despite his physical talent, Mingo would be making a huge mistake by coming out early for the 2012 Draft.

his stock has gone from Top 5-10 preseason to some questioning if he is even still 1st Rd material. methinks he still does mid or later 1st Rd. Take that or return to LSU for possible Top 5 in 2014? In 2012 #5 got 4yr/$18.5mil fully guaranteed, $7mil signing bonus. #25 4yr/$7.7mil 6mil guaranteed, $4mil signing bonus
I think he still goes pro, no guarantee for stock higher and could even go down (Corey Webster mid 1st projection in '04 had to take 2nd Rd #43 in '05)

Alonso looks MLB or inside LB only- not a Saints need at all, don't see anyone thinking him higher than mid rounds at best. Has he declared? Seems he could help his stock a lot by returning as a junior.
Clay looks like definite UDFA at 5-11 225 for a LB. That's even smaller than Casillas.

Blues/Others, got a potential flyer. First off, what's our 3rd/4th round situation? On a sidenote, where do yal go to find this info?
Anyways, on to the point, what do yal think of Cornellius (Tank) Carradine? I really think this guy has as much of a ceiling as any of the DEs. Literally before he got injured he was having a better season than Werner. And as a Clemson fan I actually watch a lot of ACC games and can tell you this guy is legit.
He's physically more gifted than Werned (IMO). He looks like he's chiseled right from stone. Now I know he hurt his ACL, but is he worth the risk in the 3rd or 4th? What do yal think?

dunno of anything up with the 3rd-4th Rds. Some seem to think we'll get the 2nd back. I won't even be looking 2nd Rd until such a thing would happen myself. Doubt it.
/thread, discussion of best draft sites. The only one I'll link here is mock draft scores. I hate "look this guy has player X going to the Saints" when it is no more than my own mock drafts as far as insight or research. We could come up with a Top Ten draft related sites so we're all using the same base references.
I search and read the various scouting reports on players to try and sense where the consensus is headed on them. For Carradine-
“Tank” has been very productive filling in as a starter for the injured Brandon Jenkins after playing a backup role in his junior season at Florida State. The former JUCO standout is still raw, developing as both a pass rusher and a run defender, but he has the ideal frame to hold up as an every-down 4-3 defensive end in the NFL, and the physical talent to be a force up front. He displays excellent edge and closing speed, flexibility to bend the arc, and violent hands to free himself from his blocker. In the era of the specialist, he is a well-rounded defender who can be equally effective against the run as he is chasing quarterbacks. If he can add strength and take to coaching at the next level, Carradine has the potential to be among the best in a talented class of pass rushers from the 2013 NFL Draft. I anticipate a steady rise up draft boards for Carradine from now until April, and expect to hear his name called in the first round on draft day.

As the years progress, one thing I’ve noticed about the NFL Draft is that throughout the course of the season, some player whom no one has really heard of is always going to bust through the brick wall between him and the NFL draft boards, and completely blow everyone away. I’m not going to say Cornellius Carradine has done that in 2012, but the Florida State defensive end has had a phenomenal senior season in place of the injured Brandon Jenkins.
Last year, Carradine had eight tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks in spot duty to go along with 38 tackles. Already in 2012, he has 36 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and seven sacks. He’s also forced a fumble, but more importantly, he’s risen his NFL Draft status from mid-late round pick to potential first round pick.
Carradine has excellent overall size at 6’5? 265 pounds, and is an aggressive player who has risen from the ranks of top JUCO prospect just two years ago, to a potential top NFL prospect at his position in 2012. Obviously, he’s still a bit raw, but that hasn’t stopped teams from using prime time picks on players like Jason Pierre-Paul and Bruce Irvin the last few years, former Junior College prospects who shot up boards with a big senior/junior season and showing flashes of elite pass rushing ability.

Yea both those articles were likely written before his injury. That's kind of my point. I assume with his injury we'd be able to get him in the 3rd/4th. And there's no doubt if he ever returns to pre-injury form he's absolutely a first round pick, zero doubt about that. The guy is an absolute stud.

that's where we fall short on insight. Most all players have some degree of risk/reward ratio to weigh into selection.
Was a TE that only played one year of football worth a 3rd Rd pick? That was a resounding risk/reward win.
Was Romeus worth a mid round pick? No, but as a nothing to lose and if he happened to turn out 7th they take him.
Nick Toon- full steam ahead might have been a borderline 1st Rder. Rick/reward makes a 4th flyer a reasonable take
The personal interviews to see what kinda smarts and devotion a guy has are other aspects we aren't truly privvy to. Some guys are known as head cases and some are ultimate gamers. There's a whole range in between tho.

Yea I think 90% of drafting is about figuring out what kind of kid you're getting and whether money will change him. I refuse to believe that anything more than 2% of top draft picks are busts in the sense where they just aren't good enough physically.
The majority of guys are the type who didn't make it because of an inability to understand schemes, work-ethic, outside influences, immaturity, etc.
So yea these are things about Carradine I don't have a clue about. I can tell you, however, that if this kid has a solid work ethic and maturity level then he's going to be a monster steal for someone. The kid's got scary ability.
