Saints Talk style obligatory should we?

I don't watch much Hawks, what's the verdict on Collins from a defensive standpoint?

His offensive numbers are off the charts good, seems like he'd be the perfect compliment to Zion, but can he be a full time 5 if Zion is at the 4?

His efficiency on offense and 3pt shooting is so good, I just don't know enough about him to know if he's max level good, but I'm intrigued.

ETA: We obviously don't have to and shouldn't rush to a deal before the deadline, but it seems like Collins will be the best player available as there are other reports stating Lavine and Beal will not be available before the deadline.

I think he and Zion could share the 4/5 just fine

What he wants is not relevant, would any team offer a max is the question.

A Zion/Collins pairing would be awesome offensively. Defensively...probably not so great

There's more you can dive into, but this is a rough look at his cleaning the glass positional stats:

Not captured above, but individually he seems to play better at power forward(his team plays better offensively with him at center), so coming here he would be playing a position he is less efficient at.

If we just say frick it and go Nets-like all offense, yeah, it can probably work to a degree. Not sure it's the direction I would want to go though.

Will it get us a chip? That I'm not so sure of. I think the Nets have the chance because they are a vet squad with 3 top ten players. Our's would be more like 2 borderline top 10 guys(at least in the coming years) and a top 25 guy with a less dynamic offensive game.

And if we are having to go through teams like the Lakers, Philly, Mil, Den, Uta, I'm not sure Collins/Zion can give enough defense, or enough overwhelming offense, to overpower the best teams in a 7 game series.

Thanks, good stuff. Looks like it would cause serious defensive issues. THat's more than fair, but we also want Lavine or Beal and we ignore defense with those 2 as well. For me, it's not that Collins is better than those 2 obviously, but he'd come cheaper than those 2 in terms of trade assets going back. But yea, it definitely doesn't sound like a good idea from a fit perspective.

Another question, I know it can work with the cap and matching salaries, but if we pretend we add Collins on a max or near max deal, knowing that wouldn't cost the bulk of our war chest of picks, we'd still have picks to make another move for a stud player.

But would we be able to afford that from a luxury tax perspective? I'm guessing no chance?

He is not MAX level good, but I really find it hard to believe that any teams think that he is.. granted he is young. I'm normally the guy that overestimates what a player is worth (jerami grant $20M). I don't think it would cost a whole lot of assets to get him either as he is due for a pay raise. I definitely think pelicans should do their due diligence and reach out. Would a swap of ball for Collins be too much of a cost in the eyes of pelicans fans?

Isn’t Jerami Grant one of the most improved players so far? He could be worth this contract

Yes, but prior to this season most thought he was going to get 12-16M not 20M. I thought he would get 20M. Was just trying to showcase I generally overvalue players but with that said I still don't think collins is a max player

Overpaying people based on the hope of a player reaching their future potential is what got Demps fired.

Gordon, Evans, Asik, Hill. All guys we paid top of or above market rate based on the hope they would live up to their contract in the future. And when they don't you are left holding the bag on a toxic asset.

I agree 100%. I was merely saying that Grant is actually worth it. They got lucky but I wouldn’t pay that much for Collins. I would prefer Lonzo if he doesn’t regress
