Yamaha Red Label Guitars,how do they sound so great?

I am talking specifically about the ones from 1968-1972,made at The Nippon Gakki factory,they are all laminated,not even a solid top,but every single 1 I play,still sounds fantastic.

50 year old cheap guitars,most sound like crap. What was their trick?
