Bernard Purdie is masterful. His contribution to the Steely Dan track, Aja, never ceases to amaze.
(from wiki) He is known for his precise musical time keeping and his signature use of triplets against a half-time backbeat: the "Purdie Shuffle.

Gadd played on Aja, but Purdie is on Deacon Blues & Home at Last

Just as one example everyone has heard - The Section (Kunkel, Sklar, Kortchmar, Doerge) was the back line for Jackson Browne on the Running on Empty album and tour.

Blaine certainly more willing to tell you about all the records on which he's played, but Kunkel and Porcaro have to be competitive in this category just on volume.
Roger Hawkins has to be up there, too, but not sure he would be considered "unsung".

Gary Mallaber. Every time I hear one of the tracks from that era, I think, "Damn, that drummer is on fire."
Steve changed personnel a lot, especially drummers, but Mallaber was fantastic. (Mallaber played on shite tons of 70s sessions, too, Eddie Money's early stuff, Van Morrison, Zevon, name somebody.)

Tony Thompson (Chic, Madonna, Bowie, Power Station, among others). Played with Zeppelin at Live Aid, and was rumored to replace Bonham for a reunion that never happened. Nile Rodgers called him the loudest drummer he ever played with.

Porcaro
I have always thought he influenced a lot of current drummers with his off beat style. Jeff Porcaro was great

Saw Wilco this fall. I don't go to a lot of shows but I commented then that he was holding the band together. He was the leader and it was obvious. Technically great as well.

Porcaro tends to show up unexpectedly, too. Like in Pink Floyd's Mother (from The Wall).

Tony Thompson personified the 80s drum sound, for sure. Big hitter.

Mick Woodmansey - Bowie through Pinups
Paul Thompson - Roxy Music before Ferry takeover
Martin Chambers - Pretenders
Bill Legend - T Rex
I have a CD from Woody Woodmansey's 70's band, U-boat.
Paul Thompson will always be THE drummer for Roxy Music in my mind.
Martin Chambers was excellent for The Pretenders- I think he gets a lot more praise from his peers than the public.
Bill Legend, was another good drummer during his T-Rex years. I wonder if he still has his band, X-T. Rex?
A couple of drummer I will add to the list of 'unsung' would be:
Terry Chambers of XTC
Tim Alexander of Primus

Also, a tremendous, clean hitter. Great drummer.
