Not to sensationalize his death, but that was a really weird series of events.

He comes out on tour after publicly talking about how difficult it is going to be for him due to his chronic pain issues and medication required for it. At the first tour stop, his camp posts that he got assaulted outside his hotel. Then it comes out that he got arrested for threatening hospital workers (presumably while getting treated after the assault). Then he goes home, and they discover that he has walking pneumonia. Then he passes away shortly after. That's a pretty wild series of events with a tragic conclusion.

He's had issues with opiates in the past. He was taking meds for his back issues and also had pneumonia, which will screw up your respiratory function, and that combined with the respiratory effects of opiates caused his demise.

That's my totally uneducated guess.

He left behind a fantastic catalog of songs !

This morning the Turnpike Troubadours released a video of their cover of Todd Snider's "Just Like Old Times". Very nice & classy. RIP Todd.
