Maybe. Like if you can get a decent used guitar. Otherwise I'd spring for a guitar, like maybe a Taylor, in the $400 range—a Baby Taylor for example. Learning and playing is a lot more fun on a guitar that looks and sounds good—it really encourages you to keep practicing, keep learning.

I've had good luck picking up nice used guitars via craigslist—and I'm left-handed.

Agreed. But FTR, I'm an acoustic player—I've got a Taylor, a Larrivee and a Seagull 12-string.

Gotta say, my Taylor isn't a Baby. I only mentioned it because I get the Taylor magazine and I've read some letters to the editor from players (not learners) who have them as around-the-house guitars. The Baby and their mini (gs I think) are in the $300–$400 range I believe.

Anyway, me personally I'd spend the extra $ to get a decent first guitar, and that includes looks. As I wrote, you may be able to find a decent guitar (probably used) in your range—$200 and under—if you scout around. But I'd stay away from the $149 whatevers at GC, etc. That's just my preference.

I've already got 3 guitars and been playing over a decade. I'm good, bro.
