Aquemini is criminally underrated. It's an all time great among all albums and not just rap albums.

With that being said Illmatic is probably still number one but I'm gonna throw some albums in that definitely should be in the conversation.

Souls of Mischief "93 till Infinity": The undisputed greatest posse album of all time and a top 20 rap album of all time. These guys were positive, intelligent, and you haven't lived until you've heard a hieroglyphics freestyle session live.

Wu Tang Clan "36 Chambers"

Gza "Liquid Swords": Although 36 Chambers is the original I think this is Gza's best collection of beats.

Gravediggaz "6 Feet Deep"

Company Flow "Funcrusher Plus": A seminal album that gets overshadowed by other mid nineties juggernauts but would be one of a handful that would define underground hip hop for the next half decade.

Mos Def "Black on Both Sides": The most underrated album in hip hop history.

Blackalicious "Melodica"

Jeru the Damaja "The Sun Rises in the East"

Zion I "MInd over Matter": this one technically came out in 2000 but I had to list it because it is so good yet overlooked. These guys are like the West Coast version of OUtcast. A buddhist, a muslim, and a Christian making dope, down to earth hip hop with drum and bass influences.
