Music outside the States and United Kingdom

Why isn't there much success from a popular standpoint in other countries besides the United States and the United Kingdom? Is it a lack of English lyrics? Is it not marketed correctly? I can really only think of a few and some of these are somewhat one hit wonders, etc. Obviously, I am sure I am missing a few, but you can get the picture...
Ireland : U2, Van Morrison, The Cranberrries
Australia: AC/DC, Men at Work, INXS, Jet, John Butler, Bee Gees, Hoodoo Gurus, Silverchair, Empire of the Sun, Xavier Rudd, and Cut Copy
France: Phoenix, Daft Punk
Jamaica: All of the Marleys, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Tosh, Dennis Browm
