Music Board Drummers: Advice Needed

Here is the decision that I must make.
I found a used DW Performance Bass Drum (22x18) for only $300, only thing it needs it a new front hoop(its cracked). I'm debating on doing this and just buying toms as I go to create a kit from the ground up.
My other option is going the Gretsch route and getting a Renown bass (about the same price). I had a Catalina Maple and loved it.
Can anyone vouch for either of these options?
