Nirvana is only considered "better" because of Cobain's death and the fact that they killed 80s hairband music and ushered in a new era.
AIC had better song writing and IMO was a better band.
Luck played a big part in Nirvana's success (and later tragedy).
AIC could have easily been THE band everyone gives credit to for changing music.

Nirvana was the hottest band in the world before Cobain's death; the way I remember it, they took over the "AP #1" spot when Axl went nuts and ruined GNR. I don't think AIC ever could have been viewed as the torch-bearer for that era. One thing that helped Nirvana is that they sounded so vastly different in terms of raw production value than the hair bands did. Not that AIC sounded similar to any of that garbage, but they were more deliberately produced than Nirvana; AIC wasn't nearly as stripped down. I really think the raw nature of their production was one of the main reasons Nirvana had to be that band and why it wasn't Pearl Jam, AIC, Soundgarden, etc.

Probably would have been Mother Love Bone, had Wood not have died.
