First off I'm not an expert on Bowie. But IIRC his breakthrough did come when he teamed up with Ronson -- so you're giving Ronson the credit. What is that called in logic class?

There were a number of factors at work. First, he began modeling his public wardrobe on the lead singer of a little known, unsigned band called Roxy Music. Yes, it's true -- Bryan Ferry/the egg came first, not Bowie/the chicken. I was surprised to learn that myself.

Also (according to a Bowie documentary I once saw) around this time he came out of the closet amid much to-do. The documentary strongly implied this was a calculated publicity grab.

So not only was Bowie hopping on a new fashion fad, but he was also trying to exploit the androgyny gimmick the Stones had hinted at. Either of which would have gotten him press in the England of 1972-- together they were a gold mine.
