Looking for suggestions on buying a banjo

Will be interested in picking one up over the next month or so and try to learn the instrument. Budget range is probably $400-500 for a 5-string with a resonator...have been playing the guitar casually since I was a kid and want to get into the banjo a little bit.

I tried learning a few years back. I too played guitar. I bought a brand new (your price range) Deering Goodtime because it was recommended to me as a good starting banjo. It's nice and light, sounds pretty good but kind of feels like a toy. If you end up really wanting to get serious learning the banjo you'd probably move up to a higher end instrument but it's a good one to test the waters.

Thanks. How did you find adjusting on the finger picking? I've messed with banjos a few times so I have some idea how they play, just wondering what the learning curve was like, given that you have played guitar.

Do you finger pick a lot on the guitar?

In a really bastardized way yeah. Will often use a normal pick with my fingers. Have never really used actual fingerpicks exclusively but would probably get them since that's more integral for a banjo.

I tried to learn how to play bluegrass banjo from books and videos. I didn't take lessons and quit within a year. It's nothing like a guitar. The finger picks feel awkward after learning rock guitar. Looking back I wish I took lessons. You can start too many bad habits just learning on your own.

Some of those glue on nails can work pretty well, use the thick ones and keep them short.
Going to banjo is hard from being a regular guitar player. I wish I had tried banjo 1st.
The Gibson models with the Earl Scruggs Cam Tuners are nice.
