Let The Good Times Roll - The Louisiana Music Thread

Since the Van the Man thread was veering off the Irish path, it was suggested we need a La music appreciation thread. Who is everyone's favorite band/musician from La? Interesting stories regarding bands passing through Louisiana?
Edit: Per Kafka's request.

Harry Choates - "Jole Blon" (1946)
quote:
"Jole Blon" or Jolie Blonde is a traditional Cajun waltz, often called "the Cajun national anthem" because of the popularity it has in Cajun culture. The song was popularized on a nationwide scale by a series of renditions and references in late 1940s country songs.

Tommy McLain - "Sweet Dreams" (1966)
A swamp pop remake of Don Gibson's country classic, and IMHO the definitive version (sorry Patsy). This made #15 on the pop chart.

In 1945, at the age of 18, Matassa opened the J&M Recording Studio at the back of his family's shop on Rampart Street, on the border of the French Quarter in New Orleans. In 1955, he moved to the larger Cosimo Recording Studio on Gov. Nichols Street, nearby in the French Quarter.
As an engineer and proprietor, Matassa was crucial to the development of the sound of R&B, rock and soul of the 1950s and 1960s, often working with the producers Dave Bartholomew and Allen Toussaint. He recorded many hits, including Fats Domino’s "The Fat Man" (a contender for the first rock and roll record), Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti", and records by Ray Charles, Lee Dorsey, Dr. John, Smiley Lewis, Bobby Mitchell, Tommy Ridgley, the Spiders and many others. He was responsible for developing what became known as the New Orleans sound, with strong drums, heavy guitar and bass, heavy piano, light horns and a strong vocal lead.

Toussaint McCall - "Nothing Takes The Place Of You" (1967)
Classic of Swamp Pop (though TA was in fact from Monroe). This made #5 R&B, #52 pop.

quote:. Gotta love that Italian immigration wave in New Orleans. While, not from La Waylon Jennings seemed to have mad love for La and picked up a lot of influence from musicians from here. He did a cover of Big Mammou and one of his earlier, if not first, radio singles (I'm pretty sure) was Jolie Blon which he sang in French with Buddy Holly playing one of the instrumenst behind him.
Matassa
Edit: also didn't Jerry Jeff Walker write Mr. Bojangles about a guy he met in prison in Nola?

Yeh I thought I had read that, but for some reason I thought he was playing with him on that particular song. Either way cool stuff. Seems like Van (back to Van lol don't hate me) references New Orleans in a few songs too. Who was the guy from BR or WBR that sang back in the day (like 70s/80s maybe)? I remember at Heads and Tails Seafood they have his record on the wall and he would come play there on Fridays sometimes. It was like Rocky something, and the record was butterfly something lol. Its been bothering me for a while and I cannot remember or find it online.

Ahhh I see what you meant. And, that might be it, I thought it was Rocky somethings. My brain keeps saying Rocky Erickson but that is def not it as thats the 13th Floor Elevators guy.
But back to La, I bet someone on here has some cool stories from the Hayride back in the day in Shreveport.

The Matassa family was very close to the Marcello crime family. It wouldn’t shock me if his studio and the musicians being promoted were part of a money-laundering operation for the Marcello Crime Family.

Yeh that wouldn't surprise me. I'm friends with a great niece of his, I'll ask her and see if she knows anything about that. granted she was born after he died, still be interesting to find out given the mob's influence with music. I went to school with a grandson of Nick Karno and he was telling me that Louis Armstrong worked for his grandpaw and was really close to him. I love those types of stories.
Edit: Rocky Saxon that is it. I wasn't sure if he was ever "popular" I just always thought it was cool he had a record.
