The lyrics to Aqualung are a criticism of the plight of the homeless and the government's turning a blind eye to the problem. Most of the rest of the album takes a big shot at the church of England. It is very much a socially conscious effort.

In the corner
Of my eye
I saw you in Rudy's
You were very high
You were high
It was a cryin' disgrace
They saw your face
On the counter
By your keys
Was a book of numbers
And your remedies
One of these
Surely will screen out the sorrow
But where are you tomorrow
I can't cry anymore
While you run around
Break away
Just when it
Seems so clear
That it's
Over now
Drink your big black cow
And get out of here
Down to Greene Street
There you go
Lookin' so outrageous
And they tell you so
You should know
How all the pros play the game
You change your name
Like a gangster
On the run
You will stagger homeward
To your precious one
I'm the one
Who must make everything right
Talk it out till daylight
I don't care anymore
Why you run around
Break away
Just when it
Seems so clear
That it's
Over now
Drink your big black cow
And get out of here
Black Cow. Love these lyrics

I love Aqualungs cameo in Cross Eyed Mary. The rich schoolgirl prostitute who prefers the gray leches over the playground school boys.

Aqualung remains today my favorite JT album and one of my top 10 favorites of all time.

Steely Dan's music has stood the test of time, and sound just as fresh today as they did 30-40 years ago. They were perfectionists, and preferred to play in studio only. Rarely played live.
I can listen to the stuff all day long on Pandora when I'm working. Always a clean popping funky sound.

Lulz. Cousin Dupree is a straight up incest song and it's hysterical.
quote:
Well I've kicked around a lot since high school
I've worked a lot of nowhere gigs
From keyboard man in a rock'n ska band
To haulin' boss crude in the big rigs
Now I've come back home to plan my next move
From the comfort of my Aunt Faye's couch
When I see my little cousin Janine walk in
All I could say was ow-ow-ouch
CHORUS:
Honey how you've grown
Like a rose
Well we used to play
When we were three
How about a kiss for your cousin Dupree
She turned my life into a living hell
In those little tops and tight capris
I pretended to be readin' the National Probe
As I was watchin' her wax her skis
On Saturday night she walked in with her date
And backs him up against the wall
I tumbled off the couch and heard myself sing
In a voice I never knew I had before
CHORUS
I'll teach you everything I know
If you teach me how to do that dance
Life is short and quid pro quo
And what's so strange about a down-home family romance?
One night we're playin' gin by a cracklin' fire
And I decided to make my play
I said babe with my boyish charm and good looks
How can you stand it for one more day
She said maybe its the skeevy look in your eyes
Or that your mind has turned to applesauce
The dreary architecture of your soul
I said - but what is it exactly turns you off?

I think Steely Dan is highly respected among other musicians - they certainly brought Jazz skills to a rock and roll audience. I think they're the best example of Jazz/Rock fusion of the 70s, and maybe ever. One of the most talented, musically, of all the 70s rock bands.
I agree with all this....... AJA is a great great album......

ANd played every other hour on Eagle 98.1. Just saying. I don't disagree, but they're just too much.
I have a relative who saw Steely Dan with YES opening up back in 1976 or so. Wow...to be at that show.
