Is it possible that Bill Withers is underrated?

Talk about one of the smoothest singers of the last 50 years...every song this guy put out had great beat/tempo, lyrics, and harmony. His voice is instantly recognizable.
It seems to me, somehow, he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. When "best ever" threads are started, I hardly see his name mentioned. If people only know his most popular songs (you know the ones), then they are missing out. His entire catalogue is to be celebrated imo.

Same. I really wish I had gotten to see him play. He has some solo acoustic stuff on youtube that is killer.

The TV performance of "Use Me" on YouTube is incredible. Everyone just lounging and laying down such a rich groove. And James Gadson on drums is so

Yea, I've seen that one. It's crazy the raw talent that used to be featured on network television. We don't get that today.

Great singer/songwriter. Always thought he and Lou Rawls had great lower register soulful voices.

What happened to those kinds of performers? I don't see any Withers or Reddings coming through the ranks.

'Ain't No Sunshine' is my fav song of all time.
You also can't beat Lovely Day, Use Me, Lonely Street Lonely Town,.
I highly recommend Live at Carnegie Hall.

Lovely Day is a fine song.
Grandma's Hands is another that gives the feels.

If anyone has not seen the "Still Bill" film, watch it.

"Withers' 1980 hit "Just the Two of Us" was a duet with Grover Washington Jr. on Elektra – "That was a 'kiss my arse' song to Columbia," says Withers. The low point came during the sessions for his last album, 1985's Watching You Watching Me. "They made me record that album at some guy's home studio," he says. "This stark-naked five-year-old girl was running around the house, and they said to her, 'We're busy. Go play with Bill.' Now, I'm this big black guy and they're sending a little naked white girl over to play with me! I said, 'I gotta get out of here. I can't take this shite!'?"
Withers hasn't released a note of music since then, aside from a guest spot on a 2004 Jimmy Buffett song; he has not performed publicly in concert in nearly 25 years."
Sucks that he bailed on the music industry. Dude was balls out a great soul singer and writer..
His career lasted eight years by his own count; in that time, he wrote and recorded some of the most loved, most covered songs of all time, particularly "Lean on Me" and "Ain't No Sunshine" — tunes that feature dead-simple, soulful instrumentation and pure melodies that haven't aged a second.

Well said, thanks for the post. His music has staying power. I also really dig on his song "Who Is He"... slightly darker, but not much. Just a really groovy beat.

Let's look at the Bill Withers resume shall we?
-Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee
-7-time Grammy nominee, 3-time winner
-1972 NAACP Image Awards Male Singer of the Year
-Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee
-West Virginia Music Hall of Fame inductee
-6 US Top 40 pop hits, Lean On Me reaching no. 1
-7 US R&B Top 10 hits
Considering he only recorded and performed for 15 years, Bill Withers is properly rated, he was an accomplished, distinctive, and successful singer-songwriter and has consequently been honored as such. Not sure how such a decorated Hall of Famer could ever be considered underrated, but I surmise that's why we have threads like these to clarify certain ambiguities.

They are now making shitty rap music.

Idk, I think Bruno Mars and The Weeknd are incredible singers in addition to being accomplished songwriters, performers, entrepreneurs, record producers, etc. They clearly derive from the Michael Jackson/Prince tradition who were concurrently influenced by the 60s/70s soul singers, an R&B progression.

Good post, brah. I like your breakdown of his skins on the wall. I know Bruno is the trendy guy these days, and I am not familiar with The Weekend. It's probably nostalgia speaking, but nobody seems to have that undefinable "it" factor like Otis, Bill, and others from the past.
